Walks with Elyse: “Towers and Turrets: Toulouse’s Trademark!”
When : Wednesday, June 6
Where: Corner of the Place du Capitole and Rue St Rome
Time: 10:00 to Noon
Fee: 10 euros per person
Walks with Elyse is going to take a hiatus for the month of May. The first walk of the
summer season (TGW will go through the month of July this year with many different
walks offered each week!!) will be a walk on Wednesday, the 6th of June.
We will begin this new season with one of the most popular and magical of our walks,
taking a tour around the ancient city center to discover the many medieval and
Renaissance towers and turrets that made Toulouse unique and famous for its
appearance during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The city of Toulouse can
boast 47 ancient brick and stone towers still in existence, some dating back to the end
of the 14OO’s. A sign of great riches and of prestige - tall, magnificently sculpted towers
were the privilege of the Capitouls, the Parliamentarians and major landowners. The
styles of the towers and their little turrets evolved over time, from narrow corkscrew
structures with miniscule parapets and barely the space to climb, to expansive,
elaborate structures wide as a large room, with terraces that could accomodate everyone
in a family. Inspired by the defensive towers built by the Romans many centuries
before, and by the dungeon-towers of the fortified castles in the countryside, the fine,
elegant brick towers of Toulouse mark its architectural heritage and help make the history
of building in Toulouse absolutely unique.
The walk will take us up rue Gambetta, on to the rue Cujas, then to rue St Rome and
the rue des Changes, passing by the Hotel Assezat, and then going on to the
Parliament area where we will discover some of the most sumptuous, surprising (and
hidden) towers ever built in Toulouse - most dating from the 14th through the 16th
centuries. Passing through strange doorways into hidden courtyards, you will be amazed
at the riches that remain from long ago, attesting to the greatest period that Toulouse had
before the 20th century! Come and join me for this wonderful return to the luxurious past
of Toulouse, and imagine yourself in lovely finery, waving to your prestigious neighbors
from the top of one of these remarkable, brick towers!!
